Shayne Lavery hailed as a ‘proper goalscorer’ after taking his Blackpool tally to two goals in 93 minutes

Blackpool manager Neil Critchley has hailed Shayne Lavery as a “proper goalscorer” after the Northern Ireland striker made it two goals in two games for his new club.

Well, truth be told, writing ‘two in two’ risks doing the explosive 22-year-old a disservice.

Lavery, who joined the Tangerines from Linfield in the summer, has actually taken just 93 minutes to rack up two goals for the Championship new boys.

Saturday’s last-gasp equaliser in the league against Bristol City at Ashton Gate came in added time after he was introduced as an 80th minute substitute.

And Wednesday night’s clinical strike in a 3-0 Carabao Cup win over Middlesbrough at Bloomfield Road came in just 80 minutes of action before being replaced late on.

To say Lavery has hit the ground running at Blackpool is an understatement. It is a sensational return for the former Everton U23 striker who scored 47 goals in 77 games for Linfield over two seasons.

Lavery’s latest highlight came when he doubled Blackpool’s lead over Boro with a near post finish after showing great strength, tenacity and composure inside the box.

Reflecting on the new boy’s 77th minute strike, Tangerines boss Critchley said: “It was a proper goalscorer’s goal, wasn’t it?

“He used his body well, nudged someone out of the way and he got a shot off in a fraction of a second and it caught the goalkeeper out.

“It caught me out as well as I wasn’t really expecting it. He just turned, he didn’t even need to look as he knew where the goal was and he just hit it.

“He was a massive threat all night and the supporters definitely appreciated his performance.”

They certainly did. On Twitter one fan posted a GIF which said simply.: “I love him.”

Blackpool’s reward for Wednesday night’s commanding win over Middlesbrough is a home tie with Sunderland in the second round of the Carabao Cup.
