Blackpool new boy Shayne Lavery’s dramatic debut goal has Tangerines boss Neil Critchley purring

Blackpool boss Neil Critchley believes he has signed a “humble” but “fearless” penalty box predator in former Linfield striker Shayne Lavery.

Lavery, who joined the Tangerines from the Blues in June, scored on his debut for the Bloomfield Road club in Saturday’s 1-1 league draw at Bristol City.

The 22-year-old was only on the pitch 13 minutes when he steered home a dramatic 93rd minute equaliser in front of the travelling support at Ashton Gate.

It was Blackpool’s first goal in the Championship in six years following the club’s return to the second flight of English football via the playoffs in May.

Afterwards, head coach Critchley praised Lavery’s goal scoring instincts off the bench and the wider impact he has made on the club since arriving from Linfield.

“He’s made such a positive impression on everyone,” he said.

“He’s a humble boy and wants to learn all the time. He’s got no fear and made a real impact in the short time he was on the pitch.

“Fantastic pass and Shayne does what he does best, he gets right inside the six yard box and it was a fantastic goalscorer’s goal.”

Lavery, who scored 30 goals for Linfield last season, hopes his last gasp rescue act against Bristol City is a sign of things to come for him in the English Championship.

“I just saw Josh (Bowler) make a run across me and as all strikers should, I got across the front post,” he said. “Luckily it fell for me and went into the back of the net.

“That’s what the gaffer wants when you come on, a bit of energy and runs in behind. I just kept doing that as soon as I came on.

“The lads dug in well to keep it at 1-0 for so long and to give us that chance at the end was a credit to the starting eleven.”

Blackpool are next in action on Wednesday night when they host Middlesbrough in the first round of the Carabao Cup.
