Linfield boss David Healy: ‘I will leave it for other people to analyse if we are light on strikers’

Linfield boss David Healy insists he won’t be panicked into dipping into the transfer market despite the pressing need for attacking reinforcements ahead of the new season on August 28.

After losing Shayne Lavery and Andy Waterworth, who scored 48 goals in all competitions between them last season, in the summer window, Healy is light on options ‘up top’.

Christy Manzinga and Billy Chadwick, who scored in Tuesday night’s 2-1 defeat to Fola Esch in the Europa Conference League, are the only strikers available to him over the age of 20.

The Big Two giants were close to recruiting Maltese international striker Kyrian Nwoko last month, but Brexit red tape resulted in the Valletta frontman joining St Patrick’s Athletic instead.

“I will leave it for other people to analyse if we are light on strikers,” said Healy. “But again, you can’t play two or three strikers. It’s not the way we play.

“We probably are one or two short in different areas but that will be for me and the people at the club to sit down and discuss when we are bringing the right people in to add to the group.

“There’s no point in rushing and getting the wrong one. We’ll make sure they are the right fit for the club.”

Healy, who celebrated his 42nd birthday on Thursday, was impressed by Chadwick’s goal against Fola Esch and believes there’s more to come from the young striker who recently arrived on loan from Hull City.

“Billy is still playing catch-up and he has missed a bit of training since he came, but he will improve, get sharper and quicker,” he said.

“But what he did show against Fola Esch was he had real composure when the opportunity fell. He slotted his chance home in good fashion.”

And while Linfield trail the Luxembourg champions, Healy is confident the Big Two giants can turn the tie around in next week’s return leg at the Stade Josy Barthel.

“I’m excited about the second leg and I’m looking forward to it,” he said.

“We will be a little bit down after the first leg, but I didn’t see anything that meant I went home and didn’t sleep. I’m not worrying myself sick for next week.

“I think we have a real opportunity but we will have to play a bit better.”
