Her husband said online: “In recent times, nudists have started walking around here, sometimes in groups of up to 12 men. My wife used to regularly jog around the forest, but stopped when she came across this group of men.
“The reason this needs to be discouraged is on the afternoon of July 15, my wife, now on a bike, was cycling through Budby Moor when she was confronted by a naked man in the bushes who was self-gratifying himself as she went by.”
The RSPB, which manages two connected reserves Sherwood Forest and Budby South Forest, admits naturism is tolerated in some restricted parts of the forest, as long as “certain behaviours are adhered to” by participants.
However, the cyclist’s husband who launched the petition on the website Change.org, added: “Every day, in good weather, nudists can be seen. The police state it is an offence if we find it offensive, which we do.
“There is a nudists’ retreat nearby that they can use, away from the public. Instead of discouraging this minority, the RSPB have stated that the nudists are welcome so long as they wear clothes when leaving and returning to their cars.”
He claimed that scores of naked people are regularly seen wandering far from secluded Budby South Forest into the busier tourist areas.
A nude awakening for locals
Another forest user wrote on Tripadvisor: “We saw an older nude man with an obese clothed woman. When we told him to put clothes on, the obese woman proceeded to take her clothes off in front of us!”
An RSPB spokesman said: “Naturists have enjoyed walking in quieter areas of Budby Forest South, just north of our busier Sherwood site, for decades, long before we began managing the reserve and their presence is tolerated – and indeed legal – provided they adhere to certain behaviours.
“The RSPB does not tolerate sexual, abusive or intimidating behaviour of any kind under any circumstances.”
Mick Allen, the communities chief at Nottinghamshire County Council, added: “Naturism in appropriate circumstances is legal, and we are not therefore in a position to ban naturists from Sherwood Forest.”
The current Sheriff of Nottingham has been approached for comment.
