Wife who stabbed husband after argument over bubble and squeak guilty of murder

In a note written within moments of the attack and later shown to the court, Mrs Jackson said she had “taken so much over the years. Look at my records”.

She went on to describe her husband as a “good daddy”, but wrote that his “mask slipped” and that she accepted her punishment, adding: “may he rot in hell.”

Jailing Jackson, Judge Martin Picton remarked she had shown “not a shred of remorse” for the killing.

Judge Picton said: “Despite professing to still love him, you sought to portray David Jackson as a monster.

“Whilst there was no doubt, as in any marriage, points of friction that the lockdown would have exacerbated, I have no doubt that he was nothing like the person you have claimed.”

Judge Picton continued: “You took the life of another human being. That is a terrible thing to do and it represents a burden you and all the other family members will have to bear for the rest of their lives.

“Their memories of (David Jackson) will always be tarnished by the manner of his death and by the way you sought to portray him.”

He added he had not seen “a shred of remorse” from the defendant during the four days she gave evidence.

‘Bleeding to death with any luck’

Ms Jackson admitted the manslaughter of the retired lieutenant colonel but denied murder, claiming he was coercive and controlling and also physically violent towards her

She was arrested after making a 999 call to police in which she told a call handler she had stabbed Mr Jackson “three times” and that he was “in the kitchen bleeding to death with any luck”.

Ms Jackson also told the operator she thought she had stabbed him in the heart – but added: “He doesn’t have one.”

The defendant told the jury her husband was so jealous when they first met she got “property of David Jackson” tattooed on her bottom.

David and Penelope Jackson first got together when she was still married to a previous partner who later killed himself after finding out about her infidelity, the court heard.

Mr Jackson was her fourth husband.

‘Domestic abuse is not physical all the time’

Defending, Clare Wade QC said: “This case is about domestic abuse, control and ultimately entrapment. Domestic abuse is not physical all of the time.”

Ms Wade said the 999 call played to the jury was evidence of her client “losing her self control because of the way she had been treated”.

Their daughter Isabelle Potterton told Bristol Crown Court she had only witnessed her father behave violently towards her mother on three occasions when she was a child.

She said she had memories of her father acting violently towards her mother between 1997 or 1998, soon after the suicide of his son from his first marriage, Gavin Jackson.

The incidents took place when the family were living on a military base in Germany when Ms Potterton was around seven or eight.

On the final occasion, Mrs Potterton recalled her father’s two daughters from his first marriage, his daughter-in-law, grandson and mother visiting them in Germany.

She said a few moments later, she saw her mother against a door on the top floor of the house with her father holding a knife to her throat.

It took three guests to pull him off her mother, she said.

But the jury, who were given a majority direction by Judge Martin Picton on Friday after two days of deliberations, returned a guilty verdict.

Daughter: ‘Every aspect of my life has been turned upside down’

Isabelle Potterton, David and Penelope Jackson’s daughter, said “every aspect of my life has been turned upside down” since her mother murdered her father.

Mrs Potterton said she had a “great life” with her parents, adding “we were a three”.

“(My parents) might occasionally make mistakes and I might have done too, that’s called being human, regardless, I always felt supported, loved and cared for by my parents.

“There was nothing I couldn’t do because I had their backing.”

She continued: “I have lost my dad but I have also lost my mum too. My life has changed forever.

“With our family dynamic being as complex as they are, I am both of (my parents’) next of kin. I have had to pick up the pieces.”

Ms Potterton, who is pregnant with her first child, said: “I have lost the man I looked up to and loved, I have lost the man who was there for me no matter what.”

Addressing the court, David Jackson’s estranged daughter Jane Calverley accused the defendant of being the abuser in the relationship.

Ms Calverley said her father would never have sought help because he would have been too proud to admit to being bullied and abuse by his wife.

Ms Calverley said that despite being estranged she had always loved her father, adding: “By taking his life you have taken away all possibility of us re-establishing a relationship.”

She continued: “You have taken so much from us all. My father was a proud man, this probably cost him his life because he would he would never have sought help.”

Ms Calverley said the defendant had “ultimate power” over the victim, adding: “You held on so tight to him and controlled him to prevent him from leaving.”

“You’ve taken so much from a family that has already felt so much pain,” she said.
